Spotlight on Hydrotherapy
Overview
Hydrotherapy involves carrying out exercises and physiotherapy treatment techniques in warm water, which has a range of benefits. It can help relax muscles, increase circulation, relieve pain and improve movement and strength. Hydrotherapy also allows those with reduced mobility to increase their mobility within the water.
Hydrotherapy is used to treat people with a range of neurological conditions, often alongside physiotherapy treatment on dry land. A key benefit is that hydrotherapy enables people to move more freely and do activities and exercises that are not otherwise possible.
How neuro physio can help you recover:
I have been inspired to write about the benefits of hydrotherapy today after seeing the transformational difference that being in water makes for a client. This individual has MS and has great difficulty in moving around and exercising on dry land, and so we looked at the alternatives.
The client enjoyed swimming, and exercising in the water. Joining her and her husband to provide hydrotherapy, teaching new exercises and activities was an absolute privilege. From having very limited ability to move independently, the client was able to have the freedom to swim, and also do hydrotherapy exercises in the water. This enabled her to undertake cardiovascular exercise, improve circulation, increase strength and range of movement in the joints, and also benefit from a boost to mental wellbeing.
This was enabled by the many benefits of hydrotherapy:
- the buoyancy of the water enables the limbs to move freely without the impact of gravity and the weight of the limbs, assisting with mobility, balance and activity. The buoyancy can also enable the therapist to apply stretching techniques if needed.
- the warmth of the water, enabling muscles to relax, joints to move more easily, and the body to move more freely. It can also help normalise muscle tone and reduce pain.
- the resistance of the water enabling strengthening and aerobic exercise.
- a calm and relaxing environment.

I will ensure that your hydrotherapy programme is designed for your goals and individual requirements. It is important that you feel at ease in the water and your treatment can be arranged so that you are able to feel relaxed. You will be at a depth you are comfortable with, have someone by the side of the pool should you wish and have the option of additional floats.
